Women’s semifinal day at Wimbledon seems to roll around more quickly every year – so much so that it becomes hard to register time passing.
Venus Williams continues to make this task even harder as she persistently rises above and beyond the expectations onlookers set for her. Having made her debut at The Championships 20 years ago in 1997, the American remains discontent with five Wimbledon titles – the latest of these picked up way back in 2008.
The 37-year-old will be playing her second consecutive semifinal at the event when she takes on no. 6 seed Johanna Konta in Thursday’s action. The 26-year-old home hope is competing in just the second major semifinal of her career, but has so far handled the expectation and pressure of her nation with surprising efficiency. Still, Venus will be her biggest challenge yet.
And even before these two take to court, the semifinal action will be well underway. World no. 15 Garbine Muguruza is playing above her ranking on the lawns where she made the final in 2015, and will be the strong favourite to progress to another ultimate showdown as she takes on surprise package Magdalena Rybarikova. Nevertheless, her Slovak opponent – full of craft and slice to cause damage – should not be overlooked. World no. 87 Rybarikova is actually tied in her head-to-head with Muguruza, and recent history suggests that she will fancy her chances against the Spaniard.
